Facilities Maintenance & HVAC Specialist
The Administration Department at Whittier College is seeking a Facilities Maintenance & HVAC Specialist. The Facilities Maintenance & HVAC Specialist maintains and oversees equipment repairs on College grounds, buildings and equipment to ensure that equipment or College departments are safe and functional.

Troubleshoots, installs, repairs, replaces and maintains HVAC/R systems and components such as boilers, chillers, pumps, motors, air handling and refrigeration equipment.

Their duties include working with service providers, inspecting facilities to meet safety regulations and coordinating and providing repairs renovations and updates as necessary.

Hours: varies
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
Full Time/Part Time status: Full Time
Salary Range: $75,000-$95,000 annually; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions of the job:
  • Completing maintenance tasks, repairs as necessary.
  • Monitoring the safety, operation and cleanliness of interior and exterior areas and equipment.
  • Performing routine maintenance of facilities and making repairs or recommendation for third-party vendor repairs/replacement as needed.
  • Ensuring proper security measures are adhered to and are in place for the College, including collaborating with outside vendors.
  • Complete assigned work orders.
  • Troubleshoot, install, repair, replace and maintain HVAC/R systems and components such as boilers, chillers, pumps, motors, air handling and refrigeration equipment, utilizing institutional knowledge, technical experience, plans, specifications and verbal instructions.
  • Assesses risks, setting overall goals, and proposing projects or systems to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
  • Create reports on maintenance, repairs, safety and other occurrences for supervisors or other relevant staff and vendors.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Manager, facilities vendors, contracted workers, College administrators and upper management on facility needs.
  • Oversee HVAC system repairs.
  • Accomplish financial Facility maintenance objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions and repairs.
  • Maintains quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards, analyzing and resolving quality and customer service problems, and recommending system improvements.
  • Contributes to Facilities team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Monitors and approves project expenditures in concert with objectives and goals, and implements solution-oriented approaches to operating with limited resources.
  • Serves as the emergency on-call maintenance technician as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Specifications and Requirements:
Previous Experience: Minimum of five years relevant full-time professional experience in a large facility similar to a residential College required, with preference given to candidate with experience working on a higher education residential campus.

Knowledge and Education: High school diploma required. Post-Secondary Technical Training or Bachelor's degree in project management, building construction preferred.

  • Significant technical skills, knowledge and related abilities required.
  • Strong knowledge of tools and techniques used to maintain, diagnose problems and repair HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, building structures and machinery.
  • Familiar with federal/state OSHA, laws, government policies and experience is essential.
  • Ability to interpret diagrams, drawings and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively with work order systems and computerized information systems.
  • Ability to work on-call hours as necessary.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Requires ability to promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive relations to change and conflict resolution.
  • Must be highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the College.
